How to select replacement balusters.

Before you take the first exciting step to replace the old balusters in your staircase, you will need to take a few important steps and make a few decisions. Then, you'll be able to use our Transformer System calculator.

1) Determine what type of staircase you have.

Do you have an open tread or knee wall staircase? This will determine the type of replacement balusters you can choose to upgrade your staircase. Open tread and knee wall installations will require different length replacement balusters and installation methods. See the knee wall page for more details.

2) Determine the rise and run of your staircase.

By measuring the rise and run of your existing staircase, you will be able to determine the angle of the staircase. This important step will provide the correct information that determines which Transformer System hardware will successfully complete your baluster upgrade. Once you have determined the rise and run, you will be able to input the information into our Transformer System calculator.

3) Select your replacement balusters.

Select from the many available forged iron replacement baluster sizes. and styles or 5400 wood balusters. Keep your choice within one baluster series. Each series has been conveniently color coded to match the appropriate Transformer System shoes and sockets. You also can mix and match baluster styles to create a unique looking staircase. Once you have a vision of your new staircase upgrade, visit the calculator to select all your balusters and Transformer System components.

Consider the following about your staircase when selecting replacement balusters.

2 baluster per tread installations.

If your present staircase has 2 balusters per tread, then select styles from the 1900 Series (19 mm) Extra Large Hollow Baluster styles, or for more impact consider the 1400 Series (14 mm) balusters.

NOTE: 1200 Series (12 mm) balusters may be used on your staircase, but the visual impact will be diminished.

3 baluster per tread installations.

If your present staircase has 3 balusters per tread, you may select styles from the Series 1400 (14 mm) solid balusters or Series 1200 (12 mm) solid balusters.

NOTE: Series 1900 (19 mm) balusters may be too large for 3 balusters per tread installations.

1-3/4" inch baluster replacement.

If you are replacing 1-3/4" square top balusters, you should use the 1900 Series (19 mm). If you are replacing 1-3/4" pin top balusters, then you should use the 1900 Series (19 mm). You can use the 1200 (12 mm) or 1400 Series (14 mm), but will need to re-paint or stain.

4) Visit The Transformer System calculator.
